Why Hanuman ji likes sindoor?

One day, Hanuman noticed that Sitaji wore a red powder in the parting of her hair. Curious, Hanuman enquired, what it was that she was wearing. Dear Hanuman, it is sindoor that I am wearing, said Sitaji. What is sindoor and why was it so important? asked Hanuman. Sindoor makes Lord Ram happy and would give Him a long and happy life, explain Sitaji.

Hanuman thought for a long time. He realised that Sitaji also did it because she loved Ram and showed it by putting sindoor in her hair. I love Ramji too, though Hanuman, And Im going to prove it! So guess what He did? Well if Sita ji can put sindoor in her hair to show her love, He decided to cover Himself with it to show His love! He took the sindoor powder and smeared his whole body with it When He entered, He was completely red, His face, the nose, dhoti, everything was completely red. It looked as though He had taken a bath in the red powder!

Sita looked at Him in surprise and asked Him why he had covered himself in sindoor. Hanuman said, Sitaji, you are a Devi, a goddess. By putting a little sindoor in your hair, you can make Lord Ram happy and His life longer. But I am only His servant, His dasa, so I will have to do more than that. And that is why I had to cover my whole body with sindoor.

This also shows the great love Hanuman had for Lord Rama. On hearing this , Lord Rama gave a boon to all his devotees that those who apply sindoor to Hanuman and observe hanuman pooja with sindoor would be blessed with longer and happy life.

Hanuman brings Sanjeevani Buti

When Lakshmana is severely wounded during the battle against Ravana, Hanuman is sent to fetch the Sanjivani, a powerful life-restoring herb, from Dronagiri mountain, in the Himalayas, to revive him. Ravana realises that if Lakshmana dies, a distraught Rama would probably give up, and so he dispatches the sorcerer Kalanemi to intercept Hanuman. Kalanemi, in the guise of a sage, deceives Hanuman, but Hanuman uncovers his plot with the help of an apsara, whom he rescues from her accursed state as a crocodile.

Lakshmana severely wounded in the battle

Ravana, upon learning that Kalanemi has been slain by Hanuman, summons Surya to rise before its appointed time because the physician Sushena had said that Lakshmana would perish if untreated by daybreak. Hanuman realizes the danger, however, and, becoming many times his normal size, detains the Sun God to prevent the break of day. He then resumes his search for the precious herb.

So hanuman ji asked an old lady (who couldn't walk on her own) the address of DRONAGIRI PARVAT ,as hanunam ji saw only that old lady in the village because all the men were at their farmlands & doing all their agricultural activities there.

Hanuman ji climbing the parvat in search of sanjeevani

That old lady said that she knew the address of dronagiri parvat & she cud take hanuman ji there, hanuman ji made thta old lady sit on his shoulders & reached dronagiri paravat. But, when he finds himself unable to identify which herb it is, he lifts the entire dronagiri parvat.

Sushena then identifies and administers the herb, and Lakshmana is saved. Rama embraces Hanuman, declaring him as dear to him as his own brother. Hanuman releases Surya from his grip, and asks forgiveness, as the Sun was also his Guru.

Lakshmana back to life

 A deep insight:

The portion which Hanuman dug out of the Himalayas or the dronagiri parvat was actually the right shoulder of dronagiri parvat !! & still the wounds of dronagiri parvat are alive!! it is said that dronagiri parvat is still feeling the pain of losing his right shoulder !! The residents of dronagiri parvat area still worship & pray to dronagiri so that dronagiri parvat's pain cud be less .
Dronagiri parvat is in uttaranchal state. People living in the village where dronagiri is situated feel themselves so lucky that they are residing under the shelter of an auspicious & holy mountain which saved the life of lakshman !!! Still when appearance wise dronagiri looks as if a big right portion of the mountain is missing.

A part of dronagiri parvat in uttranchal

People say that still a monkey comes every year to dronagiri parvat & they all can see the arrival of monkey but no one has ever seen where monkey vanishes or goes after sometime ,it's very strange as monkeys r not at all found at the mountain area of DRONAGIRI & HIMALAYAN RANGE due to extremely cold conditions as monkeys don't like living in cold areas ,but it's strange that every year a monkey comes to dronagiri & disappears after sometime(as no one can see where that monkey goes away & what he does at dronagiri ) ,people of that village even followed that monkey but failed to know the secret.

When hanuman ji brought the dronagiri parvat to srilanka, parts from the hill fell on five places in lanka, namely rumasala in galle, dolukanda in hiripitiya, ritigala, thalladi in mannar, and kachchativu in the north.

Sanjeevani Buti:

Scientists investigating what they believe is the mythical Sanjeevani herb mentioned in the epic Ramayana have discovered that it can protect living cells from the lethal effects of heat and biological stress.

Laboratory experiments have indicated that unknown substances from a herb called Selaginella bryopteriscan promote cell growth and protect them from destructive biological injuries.

Some researchers have speculated that Selaginella is Sanjeevani, used by Ram to revive his brother Lakshman injured in battle.

Sanjeevani buti

Researchers from the Madhav Institute of Technology and Sciences, Gwalior, and the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics, Hyderabad, examined the effect of the herb on insect cells and on cells taken from mice.

To mimic the way the herb is used in traditional medicine, the scientists obtained the herbal extract by leaving the herb submerged overnight in an earthen pot. Then they added the extract to cells maintained in a chemical broth. “The extract protects the cells from the harmful effects of heat, ultraviolet rays and destructive chemicals called oxidants,” said Nand Sah, professor and head of biotechnology at the Madhav Institute.

Ordinarily, living cells exposed to extreme heat, ultraviolet rays or oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide stop growing and, eventually, die. The studies on the cells carried out in Hyderabad have shown that adding the herbal extract into the mixture of cells can suppress cell death caused by ultraviolet radiation and oxidants as well as reverse heat-triggered growth arrest.

National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) is trying to identify the gene that helps Sanjivani Booti to survive severe droughts. The plant existed before 300 million years and comes under a group of plants which were the first vascular plants on earth.

When there is no moisture the plant curls up and assumes the form of a brown crust. Sanjivani Booti regains its original form when it comes in contact with water or moisture. The plant grows in rocks and arid lands.

Rama Sethu

Rama Sethu – Ramar palam mentioned in the great epic Srimad Ramayanam by Maharishi Valmiki as ‘Sethu Bandhanam’ . This bridge is 18 miles (30km) long and separate Gulf of Munnar from Palk straight was built by the Vanara Sena (Monkey army) of Lord Rama. Lord Rama with his army consists of the chief Anjaneya(Hanuman), Nalan; Neelan, Angadhan, Jambavan etc... Constructed a stone bridge across the ocean to reach Lanka and rescue Goddess Sita from the clutches of demon King Ravana.

Lord Hanuman writing "Ram" on the stones before the bridge construction.

Sea god appointed Nala, son of Vishvakarma to help Rama's troop to build a bridge. Vanaras started collecting big stones and wrote Sri Rama's name on them. When they throw them in the ocean, they started floating. On Nala's supervision they were building a bridge on ocean to reach Lanka.

Ravana had a mermaid daughter by name Sovann Matcha. When Ravana saw that vanaras building a bridge to cross the ocean, he ordered his daughter to take her companions and destroy the bridge. So Sovann Matcha along with her companions were removing the stones one by one without vanara's notice. One day some of the vanaras called Hanuman and explained him that the stones thrown by them were being missed with in some time. Hanuman took some vanaras with him and went inside ocean and observed that a large number of mermaids were taking the rocks and carrying away as soon as they tossed by vanaras. Hanuman looked for their leader and found Matcha. He tried to attack her but being mermaid she was very skilful in swimming. She was evading him very easily. Finally Hanuman gave up and asked her why she is doing this. She explained him that she is daughter of Ravana and she is following Ravana's orders. Hanuman explained her how Ravana kidnapped Sita and Matcha decided to help them. All mermaids returned the rocks and the bridge was built within seven days. Once bridge is built, Rama and his vanarasena reached Lanka through it.

According to epic Ramayana, this bridge was built more than 1.75 million years ago to assist lord Rama in crossing the Indian Ocean to reach sri lanka where he fought the war with King Ravana to free her wife ‘sita’ incarcerated by king Ravana. This bridge made of floating stones can still be seen between India and sri lanka from Rameshwaram, the place where Lord ram prayed to lord Shiva and started the construction of the bridge.

Scientific Study:

The bridge’s unique curvature and composition by age reveals that it is manmade. The legends as well as Archeological studies reveal that the first signs of human inhabitants in Sri Lanka date back to the a primitive age, about 1,750,000 years ago and the bridge’s age is also almost equivalent. This information is a crucial aspect for an insight into the mysterious legend called Ramayana, which was supposed to have taken place in treta yuga (more than 1,700,000 years ago).

Strange fact about these floating stones is that they are found only on the coastal regions of rameshwaram. These stones are similar to any other stone and possess the same features, physical and chemical composition like the stone you may find in your locality. Seeing these stones from a far distance, you may feel that this stone is made of corals but on physical examination, it is found that this is not a coral stone and it has same 40 kind of chemical compositions, like you find in a normal stone

G Mohan Das, a historian, priest and caretaker of the stones, said the following words on this stone.
“We believe there is no difference in these stones. Both the stones do not have air in them. The composition is the same and it has 40 kinds of chemicals”.

NASA's Satellite Observation of Sethu Bridge ( also known as adams bridge)

Also, floating stones of rameshwarm are not light weighted like pumice rocks and doesn’t have the chemical composition similar to pumice rocks. It might be possible that this is some special kind of heavy pumice rocks found only at rameshwaram but if this would have been the case, then it would have been confirmed by Indian archaeologists. According to visitors, some of the stones do look like pumice but are extremely heavy to be called as pumice. Also, colour of the pumice rocks is white or creamish in colour but there are many black floating stones in rameshwaram.

Rama Sethu bridge construction depicted below

On immersing an object in a liquid, it displaces the liquid to occupy a small volume of space, earlier occupied by the liquid. An object floats on a liquid only when the weight of the liquid displaced by the object is equal or more than the Weight of the object itself. This also means that the amount of object immersed on the water depends upon the relative densities of the object and displaced liquid. For ex: only 90% of the ice floats on water and remaining 10% can be seen floating outside the water. This is why only stones which are very light weighted or are hollow or have air inside floats on water. Since there are air cavities inside stone, the weight of the water displaced by stone is more than the weight of the stones and hence, it allows the stone to float on top of water. A nice attempt but I find it extremely difficult to believe. Any normal stone of that size without any air cavities also weighs 15 kilograms, contradicts this theory.

Everything is the creation of nature (God). There is an immediate cause and ultimate cause for each action. Whether these stones float due to air cavities or varying density, it just reveals the greatness of God. Scientist can only make assumptions but cannot perceive this vast creation, because this materialistic creation is beyond any logic and explanation. I believe it is not possible for human. Because even floating stone can’t stay in same place but will move on water. Without the blessings of Bhagavan SriRam it was not possible for others to build this bridge.

Adventures with the Sun

Every day, an hour before dawn, Anjana went out to collect flowers and fruits. Usually Hanuman was asleep then. So she would leave him at home and return before he woke up.
One day, she was held up on her way back. Hanuman woke up at the usual time. He was terribly hungry. He called out to his mother, “Ma I am hungry”. He waited for his mother to run to him.
He said loudly “Where are you, Ma?” Still there was no reply.
When he found no sign of Anjana he decided to find food on his own. He thought “Why should I not go out and get fruits to eat?” He ran down the steps of his home. Then he noticed a red ball to the east. It was at some distance. It was the sun rising.

Hanuman watched the sight. It was beautiful. The whole sky was aglow with morning twilight; the sun looked like a big juicy fruit. Hanuman thought that the red sun was a fruit and flew up to snatch it.

As Hanuman approached the Sun, who rides a chariot pulled by seven white horses, his father Vayu, became concerned that the heat will scorch him and blew a frigid blast to protect Hanuman.

By coincidence, it was the day of solar eclipse and the demonic tital Rahu – a disembodied head who periodically swallows the sun and the moon – was also on his way to the sun’s chariot. He saw Hanuman, grown to enormous size, seated on the chariot.Hanuman sees Rahu too, and mistook him for a wild plum. Rahu fled to Indra’s court where he complained of cosmic injustice saying “I’ve been assigned the task of swallowing the sun but now it seems there is another, bigger rahu around, and he even tried to eat me”. Alarmed, Indra marched out on his divine elephant Airavata. Hanuman saw Airavata, mistaking him for another plum fruit, and lunged for him as well. So Indra hit at Hanuman with his terrible weapon Vajrayudha. Hanuman fell down and was hurt. His cheeks became swollen. (This is why he came to be called Hanuman. ‘Hanu’ in Sanskrit means the cheek.)

Vayu, the wind god, saw Hanuman was wounded. He also saw the weapon returning to Lord Indra. He picked up Hanuman and ran in to the patalaloka, the world below the grounds of the earth. As the wind god, left the earth, there was no air in the world. People, animals and trees struggled to breathe and started to die.

Then all the gods came and consoled the Wind God. Each god conferred a boon upon the little Hanuman. Brahma, the Creator said, “No weapon will be able to kill this boy.” Indra said to the boy, “You will be a Chiranjeevi’ (immortal).”

Blessed thus by the gods, Hanuman grew up to be as strong as his father. He flew about as freely and was quite mischievous. The Rishis, who were troubled by his mischief, pronounced a curse on him. Hence, Hanuman would never know how powerful and strong he was.

Somebody else will have to remind him about his strength. (Later Lord Rama is known to have reminded Hanuman about his strengths.) Legends say, we chant Hanuman Chalisa, to remind Hanuman of his strengths.
